Projects

Some of the major projects Aldas have been involved in as airtightness testers, trainers and quality control consultants

St Sidwells Swimming Pool & Leisure Centre, Exeter

Aldas provided airtightness design guidance and extensive preliminary air leakage investigations. Testing of mock-up assemblies and partial sections, followed by preliminary and acceptance air tightness testing were undertaken by Aldas. The newbuild Passivhaus leisure centre, at St Sidwell’s Point in Exeter, passed its final test just before Christmas 2021

Agar Grove, Passivhaus Newbuild

The Agar Grove estate in Camden, North London, is being re-developed in stages to provide new build Passivhaus accommodation, ultimately delivering over 500 units. Aldas carried out preliminary and acceptance testing of Phase 1A and extensive preliminary and investigative testing of the four blocks in Phase 1B, including managing remedial sealing works in three problematic stairwells

Erneley Close, Manchester – EnerPHit Refurb

The first major EnerPHit project in the UK, the two run-down Erneley close social housing blocks were transformed with full enveloping, airtightness and MVHR systems. Aldas provided initial training for the site airtightness champions team and extensive preliminary and acceptance airtightness testing. Since completion, residents report affordable comfort and great satisfaction

Larch House – Individual Newbuild Passivhaus

Larch house is the most airtight dwelling in the UK to date, achieving a zero Passivhaus airtightness (0.048 AC/hr @ 50 Pa) in Spring 2019. Self-built by a dedicated engineer, ably assisted by a German trained master carpenter, this cross-laminated timber (CLT) set a new standard for airtightness in the UK. Aldas’s testing required re-calibration of our fan for very low airflows!

Registered with ATTMA

The Air Tightness Testing & Measurement Association (ATTMA) is a professional association dedicated to promoting technical excellence and commercial effectiveness in all air tightness testing applications. It was formed in 2002 to promote the testing and measurement industry and supports its members by extending market awareness of the technology and the members’ services.

Mischa Hewitt

As well as working with Aldas, Mischa is an energy consultant with Earthwise with a particular interest in affordable low energy buildings made from natural materials.  He has been working on domestic and commercial environmental buildings since 2003 and holds an MSc in Sustainable Architecture with Distinction from the Centre of Alternative Technology.

Mischa is a Certified Passivhaus Designer and Air Pressure Tester.  He is the co-author of the book Earthships in Europe and has written numerous articles on sustainable construction. Mischa is also a Trustee of the AECB – the Sustainable Building Association.

Liam Schofield

Liam comes from a construction background. He began being involved in energy efficient construction and airtightness on Lancaster Cohousing and moved into specialising in retrofit soon after, the first of these projects as an Airtightness Champion on Erneley Close in Manchester.

As well as working with ALDAS, he has worked on a number of newbuild and retrofit projects including PassivHaus and EnerPHit in a variety of roles including main contractor, airtightness champion, consultant and onsite training/quality assurance roles.

He also worked as Retrofit manager at an energy services and advocacy cooperative based in Manchester before returning back to site work. He completed the AECB Carbonlite Retrofit course in late 2019 and had completed a course in Thermography.

When not working, Liam remembers he has a wife and children that he enjoys the company of, and a large menagerie of animals that he tolerates. He spends his free time climbing, walking, drumming and attempting to keep his selection of tired old vehicles (that he maintains are ‘classic’) roadworthy.

Matt Clarke

Matt has been involved in sustainable building for over 10 years working with a variety of materials. He has led teams on straw bale builds and timber framed houses, collaborated on an Enerphit project and most recently on retrofitting projects.

He is a member of the AECB and completed their CarbonLite Retrofit Training course in 2021

Julia Bennett

Julia is the director of Cotswold-based integrated design company Julia Bennett Architects and is a Passivhaus Designer. Julia Bennett Architects specialise in low carbon and Passivhaus deep retrofits prioritising natural materials, new builds, thermography and PHPP, and ensuring high-quality construction on site to deliver buildings that perform well for years to come. Julia has been working in the low carbon realm for over 30 years and has a Masters Degree in Energy Efficient Building. She is involved with national work and training through The Green Register, AECB and SBUK (Strawbale Building UK). She works in two collectives with installers and airtightness testers focused on collaborating early in projects to leave a legacy of much better buildings. When she’s not working, Julia is helping bring an iconic building back into thriving community use in her home-town, gets outside as much as she can and is getting back to hill-walking.

Mike Neate

Mike Neate having initially studied architecture, has specialized for nearly two decades in project construction management of Low Energy Retrofit projects, particularly working on numerous  EnerPhit and Passsiv-Haus projects around the UK. Additionally Mike has worked as an Air-tightness contractor, and delivered on many Passiv-Haus and EnerPhit projects. Of which a number of these projects were accomplished while working alongside Paul Jennings and Aldas.

Alongside Air-tightness, architectural detailing & project management Mike also offers the role of Retrofit Coordinator and risk management.

James Allen

James’s passion is in helping to deliver on all things Aldas. That could be anything from keeping a customer happy to helping with the operations and planning. He also attempts to build websites sometimes (like the one you’re viewing now). No job is to big or small!

James likes to travel and has a passion for people. His background is quite diverse, he has been the guy at the bottom sweeping factory floors but also has ran sales teams across the world in various managerial positions. James tries to treat everyone as equals no matter their job title or position and will use his energy and enthusiasm to always try and help.

Nic Schofield

Nic is new to ALDAS, coming from a background of Ecology with a particular interest in biodiversity. She is an Ecology graduate with a long standing interest in the environment and human impact.

After planning out and embarking on a career path in Environmental science, baby number one came along. With baby number two and three came a change in career plans with a role within the NHS supporting parents, facilitating clinics and delivering antenatal classes with a particular focus on breastfeeding advocacy.

With a view to returning to Environmental science, she volunteered on an organic permaculture farm which reignited her passion for the environment. After nearly a decade discussing energy efficient construction with her husband Liam, she is looking forward to playing an active role in improving the energy efficiency of the UK’s housing stock.

In her spare time Nic gets covered in mud playing rugby for her local team, is attempting to find some muscles at the gym, loves walking her dog (even though she always claimed to be a cat person) likes growing vegetables and a bit of crochet.
